Rwanda
So after hearing a lot about Hotel Rwanda from friends and reading about it on several blogs on nomadlife I decided t watch it. My knowledge of the genocide in Rwanda was basic; that is all I knew that there was a genocide.
Hotel Rwanda opened my eyes a little bit upon the recent history of this small central African country. The movie over all was excellent, really moving, I almost shed a tear watching it. The scene that effected me the most is the one were the UN colonel tells Paul (the hotel manager) how uncaring the western world is about the future of Rwanda. I was really surprised how the UN forces, represented by one Canadian Colonel, were presented in the movie though, weak, collapsing, angry and frustrated.
After watching the movie my interest in learning more about the tragic events had increased, I was mainly interested in learning more about how the western countries and the UN perceived the genocide and the reasons and motives of their reaction. My hands fell on Romeo Dallaires book. Dallaire was the head of the UNAMIR in Rwanda during the genocide. The book is titled Shake Hands With The Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda.
Although I am not done reading the book yet, and it probably presents one dimention of this horrific chapter in Human history, it adds a new dimention to the story in Rwanda. The book talks about the peace process before the genocide, the ineptness of most western nations, how lousy and bureaucratic the UN is. Most importantly, it builds a vivid yet depressing picture of the human situation during the genocide.
I do recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about this sad chapter of our life!
On a side note, I hope we learned something from history and the mistakes in Rwanda are not repeated in Sudan. Although there are differences between Rwanda and Sudan. One has Oil, natural gas, many natural resources and of strategic importance and the other doesnt. So sad when its all about making one more dollar!
Chef!

Great Post. I am a big fan of Dallaire. I was lucky enough to meet him at the U.N. where the crowds were so big he had to schedule another meeting.
